What Is Self-Drive Boat Hire?

Self-drive boat hire — or boat rental as some people call it — means you skipper the boat yourself, no captain, no crew, just you and your group on the water. You pick up the boat from our base at The Spit Reserve in Mosman, get a full safety briefing and short training session, then head out to explore Sydney Harbour at your own pace. You choose where to go, how long to stay, and when to come back.

It is the most affordable and flexible way to experience Sydney Harbour. Unlike a chartered party boat or luxury yacht hire where the skipper controls the route and schedule, self-drive puts you in charge. Want to anchor in a quiet bay for a swim? Go for it. Feel like cruising past the Opera House? You decide. It is your boat for the day.

Do You Need a Boat Licence?

For Coral, Marlow & Frankie: No. Three of our four self-drive boats are classified as vessels that don’t require a boat licence to operate in NSW — so anyone in your group can drive. We provide full on-water training before you depart — typically 10-15 minutes — covering steering, throttle, navigation basics, and safety procedures. First-timers do this every week and handle it with no problems.

For our Axopar 28: Yes. The Axopar is a 350-horsepower sports cruiser that requires a current NSW boat licence (or interstate/international equivalent). If you hold a licence, you will love this boat — it is fast, responsive, and built for serious harbour exploration. If you don’t have a licence, Coral (The Spit), Marlow or Frankie (Double Bay) are your no-licence options, or you can learn more about getting a licence in NSW.

Self-Drive Pricing — What It Actually Costs

Self-drive is the cheapest way onto Sydney Harbour in your own private boat. Here’s where each boat starts — weekends and peak-summer dates are higher, and your exact price shows the moment you pick a date at checkout.

BoatLicenceShorter hireLonger / full dayDeparts
CoralNonefrom $400 (3 hrs)from $550 (day tripper)The Spit
MarlowNonefrom $495 (3 hrs)from $695 (Day Tripper)Double Bay
FrankieNonefrom $650 (half day)from $950 (full day)Double Bay
Axopar 28Requiredfrom $795 (half day)from $1,195 (full day)The Spit

Fuel is included on Coral, Marlow & Frankie; the Axopar’s fuel is charged on usage. A 20% surcharge applies on public holidays, and weekend / peak-summer dates are higher. All prices include GST and are starting prices — your exact price shows at checkout once you pick a date.

To put it in perspective: a 3-hour Coral hire split between 6 people works out around $67 each — less than a pub lunch, for your own private boat on Sydney Harbour. There’s no cheaper way to get a private boat experience on the water.

Self-Drive with Kids — Family Day Out on Sydney Harbour

Self-drive is one of the best ways to spend a day on Sydney Harbour with kids. There’s no skipper to coordinate around — you pick the time, you pick the route, you stop when someone needs a swim or a snack. The Coral is the family choice (no licence, full shade, 6 guests, stable), and most days families spend somewhere between 3 hours and the full day.

What kids actually want to do on a self-drive day

  • Steer the boat — older kids (10+) love a turn at the wheel under supervision. The Coral is slow and forgiving; it’s safer than you think.
  • Swim from the boat — quiet beaches like Chinaman’s Beach (off Balmoral), Castle Rock, Reef Beach (Forty Baskets) and the calm bays around The Spit are perfect anchorage. Anchor, drop the swim ladder, kids jump in.
  • Picnic onboard — Coral has shade cover and seating; bring BYO sandwiches, fruit, and an esky. No restaurant timings, no queues, no dressing up.
  • Spot wildlife — pelicans, sea eagles, sometimes dolphins in the heads-of-harbour reach. Kids notice everything from a slow-moving boat.
  • Beach landings — pull up at small beach access points (Clontarf, Castle Rock) for sandcastles or rock-pool exploring. Walk a bit, then back to the boat.

Best family routes from The Spit (Coral)

From our Mosman departure, the typical family route stays inside Middle Harbour for the morning (sheltered water, no swell), then crosses Middle Harbour into the main basin in the afternoon if you want Opera House and Bridge views. For families with younger kids (under 6), Middle Harbour alone is usually enough — it’s quieter, calmer, and the beaches are closer together. Older kids and confident families do the wider loop.

Best family routes from Double Bay (Marlow & Frankie)

From the Double Bay wharf you’re straight into the calm eastern bays — perfect for a relaxed family day without a long run to get there. Most families potter across to Rose Bay, anchor off Shark Island or in the sheltered water near Point Piper for a swim and lunch, then take it slow back. Frankie’s BBQ makes an easy on-water lunch for a group of cousins, and because Marlow and Frankie need no licence, mum, dad or an older teen can all take a turn at the helm. Short distances and flat water make this side ideal for younger kids.

What to pack for a family self-drive day

  • Swimwear, towels, change of clothes (in a dry bag)
  • Sunscreen, hats, light long-sleeves — there’s full shade cover on Coral, but reflected sun off the water is intense
  • Water bottles (the boat has an esky with ice — top up here)
  • Snacks the kids will actually eat — picnic packs without crumbs travel best
  • Phone in a waterproof bag or pouch — there’s plenty to photograph
  • A change of cash or card for ice creams at Manly or Watsons Bay (if you stop)

Safety with kids onboard

Children must wear life jackets while on board. We carry child-sized jackets in multiple sizes — let us know ages and weights when you book so we can have the right ones ready. The Coral can’t exceed 4 knots in protected waters, which means even if something goes wrong (which it doesn’t), it’s a slow-motion problem, not a fast one. The full safety briefing we run on every hire covers what to do if a child goes overboard, how to anchor safely, and where the no-go zones are.

Where Can You Go?

You depart from The Spit Reserve in Mosman, which puts you right in the heart of Middle Harbour with easy access to the main harbour. Here are the most popular routes and destinations:

Middle Harbour (closest, best for 3-hour hires)

Head north from The Spit into Middle Harbour — one of the most beautiful and sheltered parts of Sydney Harbour. Anchor at The Spit sandbar, Clontarf Beach, or Balmoral Beach for swimming and lunch. Quiet bays, calm water, and far fewer boats than the main harbour. Ideal for families with children and first-time boaters.

Main Harbour (Opera House and Bridge)

Head south from The Spit, past Taronga Zoo, and into the main harbour. Cruise past the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, then anchor in one of the eastern harbour bays — Rose Bay, Shark Island, or Clark Island. This route takes about 30-40 minutes each way, so it suits a Day Tripper booking or a full-day Axopar hire.

Manly and North Head (Axopar only)

The Axopar’s speed opens up destinations the Coral cannot reach in a half day. Head through the main harbour and up to Manly, Store Beach (accessible only by boat), or around to the sheltered bays near North Head. This is a more adventurous route best suited to experienced boaters.

From Double Bay (Marlow & Frankie)

Marlow and Frankie depart Double Bay Ferry Wharf, dropping you straight into the sheltered eastern harbour. Cruise to Rose Bay, anchor off Shark Island or Clark Island for a swim, or take it slow around the pretty bays of Point Piper and Vaucluse. The runs are short and the water is calm, which makes this side ideal for a relaxed lunch or a BBQ on the water aboard Frankie — no licence needed, so anyone in the group can take a turn at the helm.

What to Bring

  • Food and drinks — all our boats are fully BYO. Pack a picnic, sandwiches, or pick up takeaway. No alcohol restrictions.
  • Esky with ice — bring your own to keep drinks cold (Frankie has an esky on board).
  • Sunscreen and hats — the Coral has a shade canopy but you will still get sun on the water.
  • Towels and swimmers — most groups anchor in a bay and swim. The harbour is clean and calm in the sheltered bays.
  • Flat shoes — non-slip soles recommended, especially on the Axopar.
  • Phone and speaker — the Coral does not have built-in speakers (BYO portable speaker). The Axopar has a 6-speaker Bluetooth system.
  • Cash or card for fuel — Axopar only (fuel charged at the end based on usage).

Best Time of Year for Self-Drive

October to March is peak season — warm weather, longer days, and the best swimming conditions. The Coral Day Tripper works brilliantly in summer because 6.5 hours gives you time for a proper harbour tour with multiple swim stops. Book 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends in summer.

April to September is quieter and the harbour is stunning on a crisp winter day. The Coral’s shade canopy protects from light rain, and you will often have entire bays to yourself. Prices are the same year-round, but availability is much better.

Morning vs afternoon: Morning departures (9am) give you calmer water and less boat traffic. Afternoon slots suit a leisurely lunch on the water with sunset views on the way back.

Frequently Asked Questions

➤ Is self-drive boat hire safe for beginners?

Yes. The Coral is specifically designed for beginners — no licence required, easy to operate, and you receive full on-water training before departing. The harbour is sheltered and our team is available by phone throughout your hire if you need any help.

➤ Can we take children on a self-drive boat?

Absolutely. The Coral is popular with families — the shade canopy provides sun protection, the boat is stable, and the sheltered bays of Middle Harbour are safe for swimming with kids. Life jackets in all sizes are provided.

➤ What happens if the weather is bad?

If conditions are unsafe for boating, we will contact you to reschedule at no charge. Light rain and overcast weather are fine — the Coral has a full shade canopy that doubles as rain protection, and the harbour is sheltered from ocean swell. Only strong winds or storms lead to cancellations.

➤ Can we anchor and swim?

Yes — this is what most people do. Head to a sheltered bay, drop anchor, and swim off the back of the boat. The Coral has a swim platform for easy water access. Popular swimming spots include Balmoral Beach, Clontarf, Store Beach, and the bays of Middle Harbour.

➤ How far in advance should I book?

For weekends in summer (October to March), book at least 1-2 weeks ahead. Weekdays and off-peak months usually have same-week availability. Public holidays and school holidays fill up fast — book early for those dates.

➤ Is there a security deposit?

The Axopar requires a $500 pre-authorised security deposit on your credit card, which is released after the hire if there is no damage. The Coral does not require a security deposit.

➤ Where do the boats depart from?

We have two departure points. Coral and the Axopar 28 leave from Spit West Reserve, Mosman, on the northern side of the harbour. Marlow and Frankie leave from Double Bay Ferry Wharf in the eastern suburbs. Your confirmation and map show the exact wharf for your boat.

➤ Do the Double Bay boats need a licence?

No. Both Marlow and Frankie are no-licence boats — anyone in your group can drive after our on-water briefing. Only the Axopar 28 (at The Spit) requires a valid NSW boat licence.

➤ Which boat has a BBQ?

Frankie is a purpose-built BBQ pontoon with a gas barbecue and esky on board — ideal for cooking lunch on the water. Both depart from Double Bay and need no licence.
