Bareboat hire in Sydney means renting the boat without a skipper — you drive it yourself. Boatique offers two standout self-drive options: the Axopar 28 luxury sports cruiser (boat licence required) and the Coral fleet (no licence needed, no experience required). Hourly from $200, half-day from $550. Quote in 2 hours.

What kind of bareboat do you want?
How much does bareboat hire cost in Sydney?
Coral + Axopar are our own fleet — same-day availability and full Boatique service. Sailing yacht bareboat runs through agency operators; see our yacht charter Sydney for those options.
What our bareboat guests say
“The Axopar was incredible! Easy to drive once you get going, felt premium from the moment we stepped on. We did a full day around Sydney Harbour and it was the highlight of the trip.”
“Can’t believe no licence is needed. We had the Coral for 4 hours, cruised to Shark Beach, swam, came back. Staff at The Spit showed us how to drive it in about 15 minutes. Zero stress.”
“Booked the Axopar for my wife’s birthday. The freedom to go at our own pace, anchor where we wanted, and have the boat to ourselves made it unforgettable. Way better than a packed cruise.”
“Loved being the captain. The team at Boatique gave us a thorough briefing, we took our time, and made a day of it. Best thing we did in Sydney.”

What Is Bareboat Hire in Sydney?
Bareboat hire means renting a boat without a skipper — you drive it yourself. The term comes from traditional sailing charter, where “bare” meant the boat came without crew or provisions. In Sydney today, bareboat hire covers everything from small no-licence pontoon boats (like Coral) through to 9-metre sports cruisers (like our Axopar 28) up to 40-foot sailing yachts (through specialist agency operators).
It’s the opposite of a skippered charter, where a professional captain drives and you’re along for the ride. Bareboat hire puts you in control: your route, your timing, your pace. For the right group — anyone who wants a day out on the harbour with no constraints — it’s the best value and most fun way to experience Sydney Harbour.
Axopar 28 Bareboat — Licence Required
If you have an NSW boat licence (or equivalent), the Axopar 28 is Sydney’s best bareboat experience. It’s a 9m Finnish-built sports cruiser with a 240hp engine, an enclosed cabin, a deep-V hull that handles rough water beautifully, and an interior you’d expect on a boat twice the price. It’s our flagship self-drive vessel.
- Capacity: Up to 8 guests (comfortable for 6)
- Licence: NSW General Boat Licence required (or accepted equivalent from other states/countries)
- Briefing: 30-minute comprehensive walkthrough before departure
- Range: Sydney Harbour, Middle Harbour, Parramatta River, Manly, North Harbour — plenty of fuel for a full day
- From: $795 for 4 hours, $1,195 for a full day
Great for experienced boaters who want a premium day on the water without paying for a skipper, or for anyone who’s done a couple of charters and is ready to take the helm themselves.
Coral Bareboat — No Licence Needed
Don’t have a boat licence? No problem. The Coral fleet is purpose-built for no-licence bareboat hire in Sydney. Coral boats are stable pontoons with a shade canopy, swim ladder, and a simple outboard. Max speed is 10 knots, which keeps you in the no-licence class under NSW Maritime rules.
- Capacity: Up to 8 guests per Coral
- Licence: None — anyone 16+ can drive. Just show ID
- Briefing: 15-minute practical lesson before you leave The Spit
- Range: Middle Harbour mostly — Clontarf, Balmoral, Store Beach, Chinamans Beach, the Spit Basin. Stays out of the main shipping channels
- From: $400 for 3 hours, $550 for a full day
Coral is the easiest entry point to driving yourself on Sydney Harbour. If you’ve never driven a boat before, this is where to start — thousands of Boatique guests have done their first self-drive day out on a Coral.
Traditional Sailing Yacht Bareboat
If you’re a qualified sailor looking to bareboat a sailing yacht (25–40ft range, tiller or wheel, full sail rig), that’s a different product from our Axopar or Coral. Sailing yacht bareboat runs through specialist agency operators and typically requires:
- NSW Boat Licence (General)
- Sailing CV with logged hours, or formal qualification (AYF Day Skipper or equivalent)
- Security deposit $500–$2,000
- Pre-charter check-out with the operator
Boatique doesn’t offer sailing yacht bareboat charter — that product runs through specialist sailing operators in Sydney. What we do offer is the closest motorised equivalent: the Axopar 28 sports cruiser (licence required) or the no-licence Coral fleet — the same self-skippered freedom on the harbour with far less paperwork. See our yacht charter Sydney for more options.
Qualifications & Licences
Here’s who can drive what:
- No licence at all: Coral fleet only (max 10 knots, pontoon under 4.8m). Must be 16+
- NSW General Boat Licence: Axopar 28 and most agency self-drive motor boats up to ~9m. Get it in one day at any NSW Maritime-accredited provider
- NSW Licence + sailing CV: Bareboat sailing yachts (through agency)
- Overseas licences: We accept most international boat licences for the Axopar — show us the licence when you book and we’ll confirm
Need a licence? The NSW Maritime one-day course costs around $180 and you walk out with a Boat Licence. See our guide: How to get a boat licence in NSW.
Bareboat vs Skippered Charter — Which Is Right for You?
Fast decision framework:
- Choose bareboat if: You want to drive, you want maximum freedom over route/timing, your group is under 10, budget matters, you want the most fun per dollar
- Choose skippered charter if: You want to fully relax, your group is bigger than 10, it’s a celebration where you’d rather not worry about anything, you want professional service (bar staff, catering, AV)
Bareboat hire is genuinely one of the best-value experiences in Sydney. A day on the Axopar for 8 guests works out to roughly $125 per person all-in — less than a fancy restaurant dinner. For the same price as a skippered 2-hour cruise, you can bareboat all day.
Where You Can Take a Bareboat
Bareboat hire in Sydney is restricted to sheltered waters:
- Sydney Harbour (inner harbour): Rose Bay, Shark Beach, Fort Denison, Watsons Bay (weather permitting) — all accessible on the Axopar
- Middle Harbour: The Spit, Clontarf, Balmoral, Store Beach, Chinamans Beach, Quarantine Bay — accessible on both Coral and Axopar
- Parramatta River: upstream to Cockatoo Island, Hunters Hill — accessible on the Axopar
- Out of bounds: outside the Heads, Pittwater (unless specifically approved), offshore. Bareboat vessels stay in sheltered water
How to Book a Bareboat in Sydney
- Tell us what you want — Axopar (licence) or Coral (no licence), date, group size, duration
- We confirm availability — usually within 2 hours. Same-day booking often possible midweek
- Pay deposit — 25% to lock in, balance on the day
- Licence check (Axopar only) — we verify your boat licence 48 hours before departure
- Arrive 30 minutes early — for the safety briefing and walk-through of systems
- Drive it — the boat’s yours for the agreed duration. Skipper is on-call by phone if anything comes up
Bareboat Hire FAQs
Do I need a licence to bareboat in Sydney?
For the Coral fleet, no — anyone 16+ can drive. For the Axopar 28 or agency sailing yachts, yes — NSW General Boat Licence is required. We accept most international boat licences on the Axopar; confirm when you book.
What’s the difference between bareboat and self-drive?
Practically nothing — they’re the same product with different wording. “Bareboat” comes from sailing, “self-drive” is more casual. Both mean you rent the boat and drive it yourself without a skipper.
How much does bareboat hire cost?
Coral (no licence) starts at $400 for 3 hours. Axopar 28 (licence required) starts at $795 for a half day (4 hours in summer, 3.5 in winter), $1,195 for a full day. Sailing yacht bareboat through agencies typically $400–$900 per day depending on vessel size.
Can I drive the boat without experience?
On the Coral, yes — no experience needed. Our team does a 15-minute practical briefing before you leave, and the boat is genuinely simple to drive. On the Axopar, experience helps but isn’t mandatory beyond the licence. If you’ve never driven a boat of that size, we’ll walk you through systems in detail before departure.
Where do I pick up the boat?
Both Axopar and Coral depart from The Spit Reserve, Mosman — our base on Middle Harbour. Parking available nearby. Public transport via bus from the city (B1 or 171) to Spit Junction, then 10-minute walk.
What do I need to bring?
Valid ID (boat licence if Axopar), sunscreen, hat, water, and anything you want to eat or drink (BYO welcome on both). We provide all safety equipment, basic maps, and the boat is fuelled before you arrive.
What happens if the weather’s bad?
If wind forecasts exceed safe limits (typically 25+ knots) we’ll reschedule free of charge. Light rain doesn’t usually cancel a trip — the Axopar has an enclosed cabin, and Coral has a shade canopy. We’ll advise at the 24-hour pre-check-in.
Can I bring alcohol?
Yes, BYO is welcome on both Axopar and Coral. Anyone drinking must not be the person driving — NSW Maritime rules apply the same 0.05 BAC limit as driving a car. One designated skipper in your group stays sober.
Can I take the boat overnight?
The Coral and Axopar are day-hire only. Neither is set up for overnight sleeping. For overnight options, look at our superyacht charter (skippered) or overnight boat hire.
How far in advance should I book?
Weekends in peak season (Oct–Mar) book 2–4 weeks ahead. Midweek often same-day or next-day. NYE and Australia Day sell out months ahead.
Can I fish on a bareboat hire?
Yes, both Axopar and Coral are fishing-friendly. We can include fishing gear for a small extra charge, or you can bring your own. NSW fishing licence required (easily bought online). See our fishing boat hire guide for the best harbour spots.
