Sydney Harbour runs two free public fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve, both organised by the City of Sydney. The 9pm show and the midnight show are different products with different audiences. This page explains which one suits which group, and the boat hire options for each.

The 9pm Family Fireworks
The early show — recently branded “Calling Country” — is a ~10-minute display designed for families with young children. It runs at 9pm sharp, lights up the bridge and barges, and is over in time for kids to be home in bed.
It suits:
- Families with kids under 10
- Older guests who don’t want to be out past midnight
- Couples on tight budgets — see the fireworks, skip the late-night cruise pricing
- Anyone driving home (the harbour wharves clear faster after 9pm than after midnight)
It doesn’t suit: Anyone who wants the “main event” — the midnight display is significantly larger and longer, and it’s the one most people picture when they think of Sydney NYE.

The midnight fireworks
The main event — approximately 12 minutes of fireworks launched from the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House sails, and multiple barges across the central harbour basin. It’s one of the largest civic fireworks displays in the world and the moment most international viewers tune in for.
It suits:
- Adults wanting the full New Year experience
- Anyone wanting the big-occasion atmosphere — most boats run their full 6-hour cruise around this show
- Groups celebrating together, with food and drinks across the night
It doesn’t suit: Young families. By midnight kids are exhausted; getting them off a boat and home takes time; the wharves and roads are busy for 90+ minutes after the show.

The boat options for each show
If you only want the 9pm show: split-cruise tickets
A handful of Sydney operators run 9pm-only cruises at a fraction of the full-night price. The structure is simple: short cruise (2–3 hours), depart around 7:30pm, watch the 9pm show, return to wharf. Usually BYO food with a cash bar.
Real 2026 example: Fantasea Escapade publishes a 9pm cruise at $395 adult / $235 child, departing Double Bay. That’s the entry-level price point of the entire Sydney NYE boat market.
Boats running this model split their NYE into two separate ticketed cruises — the 9pm and a separate midnight cruise. If you want both, you pay for both.
If you want the midnight show: full-night cruises
The majority of Sydney NYE boats run a single full-night cruise from approximately 6–7pm through to 1am. You get both fireworks displays as part of the night, plus catering, drinks, and entertainment between them.
Price range: $850–$1,950pp on per-person tickets; $12,000+ on whole-boat charter for groups of 10 or more. See the real cost of NYE on Sydney Harbour for a full tier-by-tier breakdown.
If you want both shows on a budget
Some split-ticket operators sell the 9pm cruise and the midnight cruise as separate products. Buying both — for one couple — usually still works out cheaper than a single full-night ticket. The trade-off is you’re back at the wharf around 9:30pm, then re-boarding for the midnight cruise. Not ideal, but workable if budget is the deciding factor.

What to ask before you book a “family-friendly” NYE cruise
- Is the cruise really designed for kids, or is it adults with kids allowed? Big difference. A boat with 200 adults drinking is not a kids’ boat regardless of policy.
- What’s the minimum age? Some premium boats are 18+ only. Others allow children but at full adult ticket price.
- Is the cruise over by 9:30pm or running through midnight? Most parents underestimate how long an 11pm exhausted-kid scenario lasts.
- Is there a quiet area on board? On larger boats, a separate deck for families who want a break from the DJ.

As we approach Sydney NYE 2026, booking trends show a 40% increase in midnight cruises versus previous years, with most premium vessels now sold out by mid-November. If you’re planning ahead, early December is the final window to secure a spot on the boat of your choice—last-minute availability is typically limited to budget operators and shoulder-time slots.
