Where to Go — Beginner-Friendly Routes
Sydney Harbour is huge, but the best no-licence adventures are the calm, sheltered stretches right by each departure point.
From The Spit, Mosman — Coral
Middle Harbour Loop — head north into bushland-lined Middle Harbour, spot wildlife and anchor at Sugarloaf Bay for a swim. The calmest, most scenic route and the one most first-timers choose.
Balmoral & Chowder Bay — cruise south to Chowder Bay, drop anchor with city skyline views and enjoy a BYO lunch, then swim off the back on the way home.
Sugarloaf & Bantry Bay — with a Day Tripper you can go deeper into Middle Harbour, where it feels like you’ve left the city entirely.
From Double Bay — Marlow & Frankie
Shark Island & Rose Bay — potter across to Shark Island and the calm water off Rose Bay, one of the prettiest corners of the eastern harbour.
Seven Shillings Beach — anchor off Double Bay’s own little beach for an easy swim and lunch, minutes from the wharf.
The eastern bays — cruise the sheltered water between Point Piper and Steele Point at your own pace. We’ll suggest the best spots for the day’s conditions.
Two Departure Points
Coral departs the north side, Marlow & Frankie the east — full addresses, maps and parking on our locations page.
📍 The Spit Reserve, Mosman
Coral. Year-round, easy parking, closest to the sheltered beginner routes of Middle Harbour.
📍 Double Bay Ferry Wharf
Marlow & Frankie. On the eastern harbour — handy for the Eastern Suburbs, arrive by car or ferry.
No-Licence Boat Hire — FAQs
Do I really not need a boat licence?
Correct. Under NSW Maritime rules, certain vessels can be driven without a licence based on their size and engine. Coral, Marlow and Frankie all qualify. We give you full on-the-water training before you leave, so no licence, no experience and no qualifications of any kind are needed — anyone in your group aged 18+ can take a turn driving.
What training do I get before heading out?
Before you leave the dock our team runs a hands-on briefing of about 15 minutes — steering, throttle, navigating around other boats, anchoring, and all the safety gear. It’s practical and easy to follow, and we’re a phone call away the whole time you’re out.
Which no-licence boat should I choose?
Coral is the easiest and most intimate — perfect for first-timers, couples and small family days from The Spit in Mosman. Marlow is a bigger, fully-shaded family day boat with a toilet, at Double Bay. Frankie is a social BBQ pontoon for relaxed group days, also at Double Bay. All three need no licence and include training.
Can I bring alcohol on board?
Yes — all our self-drive boats are fully BYO, with no corkage. The same rule as driving a car applies: whoever’s driving stays under 0.05. Most groups rotate the driving so everyone gets to enjoy a drink.
Is it safe for kids and families?
Very. These boats are slow, stable and easy to handle, with life jackets in all sizes including children’s. Coral and Marlow both have full shade and easy swim access — they’re among the most family-friendly boats on the harbour.
Already have a boat licence?
If someone in your group holds a current NSW licence, the Axopar 28 sports cruiser opens up the whole harbour — faster, longer range, up to 8 guests, from $795 for a half day. Same self-drive freedom, more reach.
Meet the Axopar 28 →No-Licence Boat Hire in NSW — How It Works
Sydney is one of the few cities in the world where you can hire a boat and drive it yourself with no boating qualifications at all. Most vessel hire in NSW needs a General Boat Driving Licence, but specific boats like Coral, Marlow and Frankie are exempt based on their size and engine — which makes self-drive boating open to everyone, including visitors and tourists.
Instead of paying for a skippered charter or riding as a passenger, you get to be the captain — choosing your own route, setting your own pace and anchoring wherever looks good. The controls are deliberately simple: a throttle and a wheel, nothing else. No GPS screens to decipher, no complex instruments. If you can drive a car, you can drive these boats.
The most popular day is a group of friends or a family spending a half day on the water with BYO food and drinks — pack a picnic, head out, and find a quiet bay to anchor in. At from $400 for Coral (up to 6 guests) that’s around $70 a head, comparable to a waterfront lunch but with an experience you won’t forget. Marlow and Frankie carry up to 8 and depart Double Bay, so the whole eastern harbour is now covered too.
