Frequently asked questions

How much does Sydney Harbour boat hire actually cost?

Catamarans from $250/hr (BYO, 2hr minimum), motoryachts from $400/hr, function vessels $500-800/hr, premium yachts $1,000+/hr. Add catering ($45-200pp). A typical 4-hour 25-guest event runs $2,400-4,500 all-in. We have a full pricing breakdown at /how-much-is-boat-hire-in-sydney/.

Do you allow BYO drinks on Sydney Harbour boats?

Yes on almost every boat. BYO drinks is the standard. A handful of operators have catering-required rules (mostly because they have a paid bar service) — we flag those at quote time. RSA-trained crew handle serving.

Where do Sydney charter boats depart from?

Pickup wharves vary by boat. King Street Wharf, Rose Bay, Pyrmont (Cockle Bay), Balmoral, Watson’s Bay and Chowder Bay are the most common. Most boats can reposition to other wharves for a small fee. We have a full wharf guide at /wharves/.

Do I have to book catering through you?

No — BYO is fine on most boats. We have partner caterers who do BBQ ($45pp), finger food ($55pp), buffet ($85pp) and chef-plated ($150pp+) at competitive rates. We send their menus with the quote.

How many guests can I have on board?

Depends on the boat. Sailing catamarans: 8-30 guests. Motoryachts: 8-25. Function vessels: 30-300. Each boat has a coded capacity certified by AMSA. We send the safe maximum with every quote.

What happens if it rains?

Most function and luxury boats have enclosed climate-controlled saloons — light rain rarely cancels. Each operator has a wet-weather policy: refund, reschedule, or sail anyway. We send the specific policy in the quote.

How much deposit do I pay?

Most operators ask for 50% on booking confirmation, balance 7-14 days before the event. Specific terms vary — we send them with the quote so there’s no surprise.

What’s the refund / cancellation policy?

Varies by operator. Typically full refund 30+ days out, 50% refund 14-30 days out, no refund inside 14 days. Many will reschedule for a small admin fee. We can negotiate softer terms for off-peak dates.

How far in advance should I book?

Standard events: 4-8 weeks ahead. Peak (Dec/Jan/NYE): 2-3 months. Vivid (May-Jun): 1-2 months. Valentine’s Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day: 4-6 weeks. Last-minute (1-2 weeks out) often works for non-peak dates.

Do you charge a booking fee?

No. You pay the operator’s published rate. We make our money on the agency commission from the operator — not by marking up your quote.

Can I bring my own food?

Yes on almost every boat. BBQ setups (you bring meat) are popular. A few operators have catering-required rules — we flag them. Plates, cutlery and glassware are usually provided.

Can the boat take us to Watson’s Bay / Manly / etc?

Yes — most boats can stop at Watson’s Bay (Doyle’s), Store Beach (Manly), Castle Rock, Cabarita, Shark Island for swim stops or land stops. Time slots vary by cruise length.

Can we have a DJ or live music?

Yes — most function vessels have proper sound systems and can accommodate a DJ booth or 3-piece band. Bluetooth in for casual playlists. Tell us in the quote and we’ll match the boat.

Are children welcome?

Yes — many of our events include kids. Boats with safety nets on the bow, child life vests, and shaded back decks are best. Tell us ages in the quote so we match appropriate vessels.

What if someone has a dietary requirement?

Our partner caterers handle vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher with notice. List dietary needs in the quote enquiry — we brief the caterer.

Can I bring my dog?

Some operators allow pets — most don’t. Tell us in the enquiry and we’ll filter to pet-friendly boats.
