What happens if the weather is bad on New Year’s Eve? What if the fireworks are cancelled? What if the boat has a mechanical issue? These are the questions most NYE bookers don’t ask until the week of, when the answers matter and there’s no time left to change them.
This page covers what’s industry-typical across the Sydney market, what Boatique does about it, and the specific questions to ask any operator before you pay.

Have the fireworks ever been cancelled?
Yes, partially. The 9pm Family Fireworks was cancelled in 2019 during the bushfire crisis. The midnight fireworks went ahead that year, but with reduced scale and significant public debate over whether they should have proceeded at all.
Outside that one event, both displays have run as scheduled every year for decades. Wet weather has reduced visibility on some years but the displays themselves haven’t been postponed for rain.
What happens to your booking if the fireworks are cancelled?
This is the key question, and the answer varies wildly between operators. Three patterns dominate the Sydney market:
Pattern 1: No refund, no credit (strict)
Some operators state in their terms that NYE tickets are non-refundable under any circumstance, including fireworks cancellation, weather, or government event restriction. You paid for the cruise; the cruise happened; the show was outside their control.
Pattern 2: Partial credit toward a future booking
More common with smaller charter operators. If the headline fireworks are cancelled, you get a percentage credit toward a future booking with the same operator (often 25–50%). No cash refund.
Pattern 3: Boat-issue refunds only
Most operators will refund or rebook if the cruise can’t go ahead due to a boat problem on their end (mechanical failure, crew issue, safety condition). This is standard. What varies is what counts as “their end” — sometimes weather is included, often it isn’t.
What about bad weather on the night?
Sydney Harbour cruises run in most weather conditions. The harbour is sheltered enough that wind and rain rarely cancel a cruise. Decisions to cancel for weather are made by the skipper based on safety conditions in their specific operating area — not by the weather forecast in advance.
What you usually don’t get refunded for:
- Rain that affects your enjoyment but doesn’t stop the cruise
- Wind that limits open-deck use
- Reduced fireworks visibility due to smoke or weather
What you usually do get rebooked or refunded for:
- Cancellation by the skipper on safety grounds
- Mechanical failure preventing the cruise from running
Boatique’s cancellation policy
These cancellation terms form part of our full Terms and Conditions. If anything below appears to conflict with the Terms and Conditions, the Terms and Conditions are the authoritative version.
Customer cancellations
We understand that plans change. If you need to cancel your NYE booking, the following terms apply:
- More than 30 days before the charter date: Cancellations made more than 30 days before the charter date are eligible for a full refund minus an administrative fee.
- 15–30 days before the charter date: Cancellations made 15–30 days before the charter date are eligible for a 50% refund.
- Within 14 days of the charter date: No refunds are offered for cancellations made within 14 days of the charter date unless we can rebook the slot.
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect against unforeseen circumstances.
Boat owner / operator cancellations
If, due to circumstances beyond your control, we are unable to fulfil your reservation with the selected boat and time, you will be offered the choice of:
- Selecting an alternative available boat or time that is acceptable to you, or
- Receiving a full and unconditional refund of any and all monies paid to us for that specific booking.
Severe weather and force majeure
Reschedules may be made in cases of severe weather or unforeseen circumstances that make it unsafe to proceed with the charter, at the discretion of Boatique Sydney Boat Hire. We will work with you to find a suitable alternative date.
Please note: rescheduling for rain is not standard practice across Sydney Harbour charter operators — this is an industry-wide convention, not a Boatique-specific policy. Most charters proceed in light rain or overcast conditions, and many of our boats have covered or enclosed entertaining areas that keep guests comfortable in those conditions. Reschedules are typically only offered when the operator deems conditions genuinely unsafe (severe winds, storms, or similar). If you have specific weather concerns close to your charter date, please get in touch with us as soon as possible and we’ll discuss options.
Modifications
Changes to your booking (guest count, catering, extras) can be accommodated subject to availability and operator notice. Some changes — particularly catering — require approximately two weeks’ notice to ensure the operator’s caterer can plan the menu accordingly.
Refund processing
All refunds will be processed within 10 business days of approval.

The five questions to ask before booking any NYE cruise
- What happens to my money if the 9pm fireworks are cancelled? Get this in writing. “Past performance” answers don’t count.
- What happens if the midnight fireworks are cancelled? The midnight show is the main event. Some operators have different policies for each show.
- What happens if the boat can’t sail due to weather or mechanical issues? Industry norm is refund or rebook. Confirm it.
- By when do I have to pay in full? NYE bookings typically require full payment well before December 31. Once paid, your refund position is whatever’s in those T&Cs.
- If I have to cancel, what do I get back? See Boatique’s tiers above. Other operators have their own sliding scales.
Travel insurance for NYE cruises
For booking values above $5,000 (which covers most whole-boat NYE charters and high-end per-person tickets for groups), travel-event insurance is worth considering. Standard event insurance generally covers:
- Operator insolvency before the event
- Inability to attend due to a covered cause (illness, family emergency)
- Some “event cancellation” cover, depending on the policy
It typically doesn’t cover “I changed my mind” or “the fireworks were less impressive than I hoped.” Read the policy.
