Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

➤ How much does a kids birthday boat party cost?

Kids birthday boats start from $65/hour for BYO catamarans (up to 150 guests). Popular boats with waterslides like Barefoot Spirit ($120/hr) and Bayrunner ($75/hr) are the best value. Per child for a 3-4 hour party, expect $20-$50 depending on the boat and catering choices.

➤ What boats have waterslides for kids?

Barefoot Spirit has a waterslide plus BBQ and BYO for up to 200 guests ($120/hr). Bayrunner has a 4.5m waterslide with BBQ, dance floor, and swim platform for up to 180 guests ($75/hr). Both are extremely popular for kids parties.

➤ Is it safe for kids on a boat?

Yes — all boats have professional skippers and safety equipment. Catamarans are the most stable boats on the harbour with minimal rocking. Life jackets are available for all ages. Swim platforms allow safe water access. Crews are experienced with family groups.

➤ What age is appropriate for a boat birthday party?

Boat parties work well for ages 5 and up. Younger children should have adult supervision near the water. Waterslide boats are best for ages 8+. Most boats have shaded areas, toilets, and enough space for kids to play safely.

➤ Can we bring our own food and cake for a kids party?

Yes — most boats are BYO so you can bring party food, cake, drinks, decorations, and party supplies. Boats provide fridges and tables. Some parents order pizza delivery to the wharf before departure. Catering packages with kid-friendly menus are also available.

Kids Birthday Party Boat Hire in Sydney

A boat party on Sydney Harbour is one of the most memorable birthday experiences you can give a child. Fresh air, swimming, harbour views, and the novelty of being on a boat — kids absolutely love it. And for parents, it is surprisingly easy to organise when you know what to look for.

At Boatique, we help families book boats for kids’ birthday parties every week. This guide covers everything you need to know — which boats work best, how to keep things safe, what food to bring, and how to structure the day so the kids (and adults) have a great time.

Best Ages for a Boat Birthday Party

Boat parties work for a wide range of ages, but the ideal setup changes as kids get older.

Ages 5-7

Younger children love the adventure of being on a boat, but they need more supervision and a simpler structure. A 2 to 3 hour cruise is usually enough — attention spans are shorter, and some children may get tired or overstimulated. Choose a stable vessel (a pontoon or catamaran is ideal) with flat, safe decks and easy access to covered areas in case of sun or weather.

Swimming is usually the highlight for this age group, but it needs to be closely supervised. Anchoring in a calm, shallow bay with adults in the water alongside the kids works best. Life jackets for all children are essential.

Ages 8-12

This is the sweet spot for kids’ boat parties. Children this age are comfortable on boats, love swimming and jumping off the back deck, and have the stamina for a 3 to 4 hour outing. They are old enough to follow safety instructions but still young enough to be genuinely excited about the experience.

At this age, you can incorporate more activities — snorkelling, fishing, exploring beaches, and games on deck. The party practically runs itself once you have food, water access, and a bit of music.

Ages 13+

Teenagers appreciate the cool factor of a harbour party. The boat becomes a floating hangout — music, food, swimming, and harbour views. For teen parties, a vessel with a good sound system and plenty of open deck space for socialising works best. You may also want a boat with a separate area where supervising parents can hang back without cramping the style.

Choosing the Right Boat for a Kids Party

Not every boat is ideal for children. Here is what to look for:

Stability

Kids move around a lot, and a stable boat reduces the risk of slips and stumbles. Catamarans and pontoon-style vessels are the most stable options — their wide, flat decks minimize rocking even when the harbour is choppy. Check our pontoon boat hire page for the best stable vessels.

Easy Water Access

A swim platform at the rear of the boat, or a low transom with a sturdy ladder, makes getting in and out of the water safe and easy for children. Avoid boats where swimming access involves climbing over high sides.

Shade and Shelter

Australian sun is no joke, especially on the water where it reflects off the surface. Choose a boat with a covered deck area or bimini top so kids can get out of the sun between swims. This is particularly important for younger children who burn quickly.

Safe Deck Layout

Look for boats with secure railings, non-slip surfaces, and minimal pinch points. Open deck layouts are better than boats with lots of narrow walkways and steps between levels — fewer places for kids to trip or get stuck.

Our Top Boats for Kids Parties

Barefoot Explorer

The Barefoot Explorer is one of our top recommendations for kids’ parties. Spacious deck areas, easy water access, BBQ facilities for cooking, and a layout that gives parents visibility over the whole group. The explorer-style design appeals to kids’ sense of adventure too.

Cruise Cat

The Cruise Cat offers catamaran stability with generous space across multiple levels. Kids love having different areas to explore, and the wide beam means the boat barely rocks. Covered and open sections give you weather flexibility, and the swim access is excellent.

Coast

The Coast is a popular choice for smaller kids’ parties. Manageable in size, comfortable, and well-maintained, it provides a quality experience at an accessible price point. Good deck space for activities and an easy boarding setup for younger children.

Bayrunner

The Bayrunner works well for budget-conscious families. It handles groups of up to 12 comfortably, has a practical layout for a kids’ outing, and allows BYO food and drinks. The lower price point makes it an attractive option when you are already spending on party food and decorations.

Oscar 2

The Oscar 2 is another solid budget option with good space for its size and a family-friendly layout. It is unpretentious and functional — exactly what you need when the focus is on the kids having fun rather than impressing adults.

Shadow

The Shadow brings a bit more space and a different character to the fleet. It handles larger groups of kids well and has the deck area to set up activities, food stations, and a dance area. BBQ facilities onboard mean you can cook fresh food for the party.

Safety on a Kids Boat Party

Safety is the first question every parent asks, and rightly so. Here is how it works:

Life Jackets

Life jackets in children’s sizes are available on all crewed charter boats. For younger children (under 12), we strongly recommend they wear life jackets for the entire cruise, not just when swimming. The crew will fit them properly before departure.

Supervision Ratios

Plan for at least one supervising adult for every four to five children under 10, and at least one adult for every six to eight children aged 10 and over. During swimming, increase the ratio — at least one adult in the water for every three to four young children.

The boat’s crew manages the vessel, not the children. Supervision of the kids is the responsibility of the adults in the party group. Make sure you have enough parents or guardians attending to cover this properly.

Swim Safety

  • The skipper will choose calm, sheltered anchorages away from boat traffic
  • Children must wear life jackets when swimming unless they are strong, confident swimmers and a parent approves
  • At least one adult should be in the water at all times when children are swimming
  • A head count before and after every swim stop is essential
  • Set clear rules about jumping off the boat — feet first only, check the water below, one at a time

Sun Protection

Sunscreen (SPF 50+, reapplied every 2 hours), hats, and rashies are not optional — they are essential. The water reflects UV, increasing exposure, and kids are often having too much fun to notice they are burning. Apply sunscreen before boarding and bring the bottle for reapplication.

What Food to Bring for a Kids Boat Party

Keep it simple. Elaborate food is wasted on kids who would rather be swimming. Here is what works:

Easy Winners

  • Sausages and bread rolls (cook on the BBQ)
  • Mini pizzas (pre-made, reheat on the boat if facilities allow)
  • Chicken nuggets and chips (pre-cooked, served at room temperature)
  • Sandwiches and wraps (made at home, stored in an esky)
  • Fruit platters — watermelon, grapes, strawberries
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Popcorn and chips for snacking

Birthday Cake

Bring a cake that travels well. Mud cake, ice cream cake in an esky, or cupcakes are more practical than a tall, multi-layered creation that might not survive the harbour chop. Cupcakes are actually the best option — easy to serve, no cutting required, and each child gets their own.

Drinks

Water bottles (lots of them — kids dehydrate fast on the water), juice boxes, soft drinks. Bring more water than you think you need. For the adults, a separate esky with their drinks keeps things organised.

What Not to Bring

  • Anything that needs a lot of preparation on the boat
  • Glass bottles (safety hazard on a boat deck)
  • Anything that melts quickly — the deck gets hot in summer
  • Elaborate decorations that could blow away (balloons on strings are fine, loose confetti is not)

Structuring the Party

A loose schedule works better than a rigid timeline. Kids on boats are easily entertained by the environment itself. Here is a suggested flow for a 3-hour party:

First 30 Minutes — Boarding and Departure

Get everyone aboard, do the safety briefing, hand out life jackets, and depart. Kids are excited and want to watch the boat leave the wharf and see the harbour open up. This is a good time for snacks and drinks while everyone settles in.

30-60 Minutes — Harbour Cruise

Cruise past the Opera House, under the Harbour Bridge, and along the harbour foreshore. Kids love spotting landmarks, other boats, and wildlife (seals, dolphins if you are lucky, and plenty of seabirds). Play some music and let them explore the boat.

60-120 Minutes — Swim Stop and Food

Anchor in a sheltered bay for swimming. This is the main event for most kids’ parties. While the kids swim, get the BBQ going or set up the food. Serve lunch, do the birthday cake and candles, and let them get back in the water afterwards.

120-180 Minutes — Return Cruise

The return leg is usually calmer. Kids are pleasantly tired from swimming, full from lunch, and happy to sit on deck and enjoy the ride back. This is a good time for quieter activities — colouring, a simple game, or just chatting.

Pricing for Kids Party Boat Hire

15-20 kids + adults $500 – $850/hr 3 hours $1,500 – $2,550
20-30 kids + adults $500 – $850/hr 3-4 hours $1,500 – $3,400

Remember to count adults in your total head count when choosing a boat. If you have 15 kids and 8 adults, you need a boat for 23 people. For budget-friendly options, check our cheap boat hire page.

For larger kids’ parties (think whole-class outings or combined celebrations), our boats for up to 30 people page has vessels with the space to handle big groups comfortably. And for any kids’ event, browse our full party boat and birthday boat hire pages for the complete range.

Tips from Parents Who Have Done It

  • Send a packing list to other parents: swimsuit, towel, hat, sunscreen, change of clothes, water bottle. Saves you being responsible for everything.
  • Bring spare towels: someone always forgets theirs.
  • Waterproof phone cases: for the adults taking photos. Phones and boats are a risky combination.
  • Non-slip shoes: not mandatory, but helpful for younger kids on deck. Wet bare feet on fibreglass can be slippery.
  • Seasickness tablets: give them 30 minutes before boarding if a child is prone to motion sickness. Better safe than sorry.
  • Keep the party bags simple: a small bag of lollies and a thank-you note is fine. No one expects elaborate goodie bags at a boat party — the boat IS the party.
