What’s the harbour like in the April school holidays?
Genuinely lovely, and quietly one of the best-kept secrets of the boating year. The sea has spent all summer warming up, so early-to-mid April water is still comfortably swimmable for kids — often more pleasant than early summer. Autumn also tends to bring lighter winds and more settled days than the thundery back half of summer, which means calmer water in the bays and easier conditions for first-time skippers. Days are shorter than January, so plan around a late-morning start rather than a long twilight finish, and throw a jumper in the bag for the run home. None of this is guaranteed on any given date — it’s Sydney — but as a season, April stacks up beautifully for a family day on the water.
Is a self-drive boat a good school-holiday outing?
For families of up to six, it’s arguably the best one. A skippered Easter charter runs like the best kind of family lunch: a gentle cruise, a long anchor stop at a sheltered beach for swimming and a proper spread, and nobody arguing about the driving. When should you book — and which days go first?
The April holidays contain two very different kinds of days. The Easter and Anzac Day public-holiday weekends behave like summer weekends: they’re the days everyone wants, and they book out earlier — if your heart’s set on Good Friday or Easter Saturday, book as far ahead as you can. The ordinary midweek days in between are the opposite: good availability, quieter water, and often the nicest days to be out there. If your dates are flexible — like the family who told us “any time 3rd of April to 14th of April” — say exactly that in your enquiry. What should you bring for kids on a boat day?
- Sun kit, still. April sun in Sydney is milder than January but far from harmless — hats, sunscreen and rashies stay in the bag.
- A warm layer each. The autumn air cools noticeably once the sun drops behind the headlands, especially on the run home.
- Swimmers and towels. The water’s still warm — the swim stop will happen.
