How a self-drive birthday works
Three steps, no skipper, no venue hire.
Book the boat online
Pick a date, a time and a boat. Instant confirmation. The Coral is $400 for three hours — that’s $67 a head with six aboard.
Turn up with the food
Everything is BYO — the cake, the platters, the drinks. We give you a full safety briefing and a short test drive before you leave the wharf.
Anchor somewhere good
Store Beach, Chinamans Beach, Rose Bay, or a quiet cove in Middle Harbour. Drop the swim ladder, cut the cake, take the photo.

Why drive it yourself for a birthday
The maths, and the day.
A skippered birthday charter on Sydney Harbour starts around $1,500 for a couple of hours and climbs fast once catering and a bar package are added. A self-drive boat is the whole boat, for the whole hire, for $400 to $495, and you bring what you actually want to eat and drink.
It is also a better day. Nobody is watching the clock on a venue booking, there is no dress code, and the birthday person gets to drive. You anchor where you like, swim when you like, and the only schedule is the one you set.
For a party bigger than ten, book two boats. Coral and Coral 2 depart The Spit within the hour of each other, and Marlow and Frankie share the same wharf at Double Bay — so a group of eighteen can spend the day together across two boats and raft up at anchor.

Kids’ birthdays on the water
Yes, and it’s easier than a party venue.
Coral is the boat we recommend for a children’s birthday. It is stable, fully shaded, and the sheltered bays of Middle Harbour are safe for swimming. Children must wear life jackets on board and we carry child sizes — tell us ages and weights when you book so the right ones are ready at the wharf.
A three-hour hire is about right for young kids: one stop to swim, one stop for cake, home before anyone melts down. The Day Tripper suits older children who want to get to Manly and back.

Milestone birthdays: 30th, 40th, 50th
Small group, big day, no venue.
For a 30th or 40th, Frankie is the one: ten friends, a BBQ lunch you cooked yourselves, and the pontoon’s open deck for the afternoon. Marlow suits a 50th or 60th — fully shaded, a toilet on board, and a calmer, more comfortable ride for a long lunch.
If the guest list runs past ten, or you want the day catered and skippered, our birthday party boat hire page covers the crewed charter boats from 10 to 100 guests.
Frequently Asked Questions
➤ Do we need a boat licence for a birthday hire?
No. Coral, Marlow and Frankie are all no-licence boats. Whoever drives gets a full briefing and a test drive at the wharf before you leave, and our team is on the phone throughout the hire.
➤ Can we bring alcohol?
Yes. All our boats are BYO with no alcohol restrictions for guests. The person driving stays under 0.05, the same as a car.
➤ Can we bring a cake and decorations?
Absolutely. A cake, balloons and bunting are fine — just no confetti, glitter or sparklers, and take everything home with you. Coral’s inside table is the spot for cutting the cake.
➤ How many people fit?
Coral takes six, Marlow takes eight and Frankie ten. For a bigger birthday, book two boats from the same wharf and spend the day together.
➤ What if it rains on the day?
If conditions are unsafe we move your booking to another date or issue a credit. Light rain with calm water is still a good day out — the boats are shaded.
Ready to book?
Pick a date and the price appears instantly. Weekends in December and January book out early — a few weeks ahead is wise.
